Fairy Tale End of Summer Celebration, Saturday, August 23 @ 10:30 am -- Fairy Tale Animals with Lina

Come meet some of the animals that are we have read about in Fairy Tales:  the turtles, the doves, the rabbits and maybe even… a giant Madagascar hissing cockroach.  And, we shall read such stories as Martina the Beautiful Cockroach:  A Cuban Folktale, and the Fisherman and the Grateful Turtle, and The White Dove:  A Fairy-tale from Daghestan, and more… we meet these fairy tale creatures, touch them, learn about them, and read fanciful stories about them… and make a delicious craft… all on a warm Summer's morning -- Saturday, August 23 @ 10:30 am.  Oh yes... PRIZES - PRIZES - PRIZES for END OF THE GOVERNOR'S SUMMER READING CHALLENGE! Come celebrate SummerTime & Fairy Tales with our "End of Summer" Party at the Rowayton Library.  Everyone is invited

BookTalk for Adults Beloved by Toni Morrison, Wednesday, August 27 @ 7pm – for dessert and discussion

Wednesday, August 27 @ 7pm – BookTalk for Adults Beloved by Toni Morrison, for dessert and discussion.

Staring unflinchingly into the abyss of slavery, this novel transforms history into a story as powerful as Exodus and as intimate as a lullaby.  Sethe, its protagonist, was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free.  She has too many memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened and Sethe’s new home is haunted by the ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word:  Beloved.

Mark Schenker, Dean of Academic Affairs, Yale College is our discussion leader.  Dessert and Discussion begin at 7pm.  For more information, please call the Library at (203) 838-5038.  Multiple copies of the books are available at the library.  This program is co-sponsored by the Rowayton Civic Association and is made possible in part through a grant from the Connecticut Humanities Council.  This program is free and open to the public.

Libraries Shine In Tough Economic Times

NPR's All Things Considered, July 29, 2008 · Listen to this 4 minute audio article: "With the economy slowing, many Americans are doing research in the public library. Boyd County, Ky., Library Director Debbie Cosper says public-use computers are always full and people are checking out books rather than buying them."
